Black Mold and Sippy Cups?

Gibby Girl asked:

My son has several different cups that he uses (and really likes). We have the Playtex ones ans some Nuby ones! I went to go refill his Nuby one today (clean) and as I went to go put the valve into it I noticed that there was some black mold IN the valve. I Clean them DAILY in hot (virtually boiling) water and soap, I rinse them very well and I let them dry well before putting them away.

What is causing this? And is there anyway I can get rid of it (safely) so he can keep using his cups? Or should I just scrap the whole thing and buy some new ones (you cant buy new valves for these ones like you can with the Playtex).

Has this happened to anyone, and do you have any suggestions for me to at the very least prevent it from happening?

I’m so irritated!!

Many thanks!

These are the cups in question: (except there is no print, they are plain colored)

I had the same problem. I just soak them in bleach water once a week. Be sure to dry them compliantly before putting them away and this should stop the mold.

I have that problem with the rings and nipples on my daughter’s bottles. It isn’t a sanitary issue here, either. The only thing I’ve figured out is that the water just gets trapped or the parts aren’t dried enough, so the mold grows. You can scrap them if you can find or afford replacements. If you can’t afford replacements, you can use the little brush on a bottle brush to manually clean it (boiling hasn’t helped as far as I’ve seen personally). I use an antibacterial dish soap and just scrub it well every time it is cleaned. That will take care of the mold currently, and if they are scrubbed like that everytime, it shouldn’t come back.

Mold will grow where there’s moisture. The mold could have come from the air or food that didn’t get cleaned off completely. You may be able to get rid of the mold if you really want to keep these. Soak them in bleach, scrub and rinse. Then wash them normally, making sure they dry completely.

Depending on how old your son is, he may be able to handle a sippy cup without valves. Check out the take ‘n toss sippy cups. They’re the only ones we use anymore, except when we go out to eat and bring milk in his diaper bag. They will drip if they’re shaken.

Once they start accumulating grime, it’s time to toss them. Ours generally last about 6 months or so.

I also store mine in pieces. I never put it together until I need it.

Yeah it use to happen to mine. I wash them then I use a baby Q-tip, they’re smaller, and wipe all the tight spots dry. You can try to get the mold off with the Q tips too. Then just make sure you dry the tight areas after every wash. It’s a pain but it keeps away the mold. Then when he gets old enough switch to the straw type. They are easier to clean IMO.

if it will not come apart to clean, and you see mold, then throw them out. and buy new ones. or just throw the tops out and keep the bottom. he will use regular cups soon enough and can use them without the top.

or do what i did. if the top is unusable, the bottoms became tub toys, or outside pool toys.
