Black mold problemmm?

Kelly asked:

Well I told my friend I would help her and research this topic for her since I have a yahoo answers account and she no longer has a computer.
Heres the short sum up of the situation:
•My friend’s roof leaked and she started getting black mold in her house.
•Her daughter is a pretty messy girl and had a bunch of clothes and other personal belongings on the floor.
•A lot of her daughters clothes will have to be thrown out unless they can come up with a remedy/solution to remove mold from clothes.
Anyone got any ideas or had a problem like this or know any advice I could give her because she is really stressed about it, her daughter is all upset, and it would be a shame to have to throw at least a hundred dollars worth of clothes out..
So if anybody could give me any advice to tell her or any actual facts and proved methods or anything I’d greatly appreciate it.
Thanks an advance!! xx

They have to be bleach worthy for the first method. Boil a large pot of water add one cup automatic dishwasher CASCADE powder in stir till dissolved. add one cup fresh clorox bleach, with wooden spoon stir clothing in solution and let set as long as possible, by this time you should have heat on simmer to keep the temp. used to get out baby diaper and bib stains. A very old fashion method. I Have heard that vinegar works and your could use that on the colored items. I have never used it on clothes but I have used it on a wall that mildewed from a water leak and it worked on it. And I have forgotten about some clothes and left them in the washer to long and it got rid of the funky smell just before the mildew smell. Hopes it helps if not you have to throw them out anyway.

Black mold is very bad. Tell your friend to make sure leaky areas are fully dried out. Then 1 room at a time go in and clean it. Make sure she sections off the rooms, the mold will spread through the air which will be extremely bad if the rooms are not sealed off. Killing the mold spores is the most important thing, grab some soap and scrub the mold ridden areas, then spray with a mold disinfectant. Unfortunately, the clothing should be thrown away if it was exposed. Don’t want to take any chances. Black mold is nasty and houses can be condemned. When they are getting rid of any damaged articles, they should try and take it outside by putting it through the nearest window, don’t want to drag it around the house. Wear plastic gloves, and a face mask just the little white ones, no need to inhale the nasty mold.

Hope this was somewhat helpful :)

Kelley, Ammonia is the prefered way to wash clothes, use as oyu would bleach. BUt that is the least of your worries. You need to worry about the black mold that can form behing the walls from the leak. its DANGEROUS!!!!
