My father is 80 years old. I clean his house for him twice a month. It is not visibly nasty or dirty but there are problems. My parents both smoked in the house for 35 years. My dad stopped after my mother died 5 years ago. He keeps the windows shut and the blinds down. Here is the problem, when I clean, I get sick. When I go visit him with my 3 1/2 year old son we both get sick. He usually gets sick enough to have to go to the doctor and sometimes the hospital. The air in my fathers house feels dusty/tight/thick. I suspected mold so I got a tester kit yesterday at Home Depot. I am waiting on the results. My father stays sick with a heavy cough and I have tried to get him to move in with me, sell the house or at least try to pull up old carpets and wallpaper. He can afford it, but doesn’t want to. I cleaned his house through my pregnancy and got very sick and delivered 2 1/2 months early.(I am not sure if this was due to being in his house…the reason was a mystery) I have got to at least keep my son away from that house, but my father needs me. I cannot subject my son to exposure to his house, it isn’t fair to him. Not only does someone need to clean(5 maids have quit claiming probably black mold), but I need to check up on him, take him often to the doctor, make sure he is eating, taking his meds…What can I do?
