SeaShells asked: I bought 4 bags of Scott’s Nature Scapes mulch (deep forest brown) today at Home Depot. I pulled a muscle trying to lift it into the cart and into the trunk of my car, so taking it back was out of the question. I opened one of the bags of mulch and lo and behold there was white stuff all over it… It looks like baking soda. I called Scott’s and they said it was probably mold, but “not the toxic kind”. They said it should dry out with the air and sunlight this week and that it would not rot my flowers or make me sick. They’re sending me a refund anyway though…=)
I called my grandpa to double check with him whether it would be safe for me to work with it and he said it’s not the same kind that grows in peoples’ houses, so it should be ok.
I just want to verify that with other people… When I hear “mold” I get scared. Will it be ok for me to spread in my flower bed? Will the white color go away? Because right now it looks like someone was smuggling cocaine in the mulch or something… I just planted like $70 worth of flowers and put down weed barrier. Thanks.
