Can your landlord actually tell you to clean up black mold on your own? well we are not 100% positive it is black mold but it look like the images of black mold we have brought up on the net. I told him about it and he told me to clean it up myself, said testing was to expensive… what can I do? I don’t want to clean it up myself. I have kids 3 in my house under the age of two who are often sick. I can’t wait any longer to get it out of my house. Advice Please!!!!! Thankyou!!
yes, I believe my kids being sick is the mold. I dont want to move, I want it gone. What can I do and who could I call for help. Is it really safe to clean it up yourself?

Black Mold in bathroom?

I live by myself in an apartment w/ negligent landlords. Noticed a few weeks ago black mold growing on ceiling of my bathroom. It seems that upstairs tenant may have had problems w/ his toilet because the spot w/ the mold is slightly warped from wetness, and located where his toilet would be. I have called landlords twice, left messages on their machine, four days apart. They haven’t gotten back to me. I plan on sending a certified letter to them so I have proof they received it.
With 4months of my lease remaining, I worry that they will not let me out of it & I will have to pay the remaining months. Do they have to let me out of the agreement by law because it is unsafe? I have no options, no place to go when they eventually come to clean it. Should I require landlords put me up in a hotel?
What shall I do in the meantime? How much of a risk does this pose? Ive been getting headaches at night but am unsure if they are related. Should I remove all my belongings from the bathroom and keep the door closed?
How can I tell if it’s affected anything else in my apartment; if the spores can travel and spread. Do I need to get rid of anything in my apartment?

Some of the people ive spoke to dont think its a real threat, but it doesnt sit well with me.
It isnt something I can clean the surface of. It looks like the drywall needs to be cut out and replaced.
No window. I ALWAYS use the fan when showering.

Isn’t most mold inspection and remediation a scam?

Home inspectors always seem to find some evidence of mold and refer buyers to another company. They charge buyers even more money and always find mold. They then extort more money from the sellers for some phony remediation. Buyers and sellers get screwed, home inspectors make money from kickbacks and mold companies laugh their way to the bank. The truth is mold is everywhere! True “toxic mold” is very, very rare.
I’m sure mold might be more of a problem in warm climates like TX and FL but in northern climates where there isn’t the high heat and humidity mold growth is minimal. I think this is sounds more like a form of “protection racket” and it would not suprise me that organized crime was involved.

black mold/ rental dilemma?

So a few friends and I rent a house and pay for it in cash. So i’m not really sure as to how legit our rental is. With that said, about six months ago, tiles started falling out of the wall in our first floor bathroom due to moisture (which we mentioned to the landlord on several occasions but have no proof that we did so). Recently we discovered a black mold attack in the basement directly underneath this bathroom. The mold also happens to be right near the vents. Some of us have been hacking more than our normal smokers coughs and I’m pretty sure all the books I have been storing in the basement must be thrown out (and I have a massive book collection). Is there any way that I can take legal action though we don’t have a copy of the lease and we’re paying the guy in cash? or are we seriously SOL?
