Chemically, why does mold grow in water exposed to the air after a few days?
xdrakemanx asked:
I’m doing a lab report for my chemistry class, and I’d like to understand why mold grew in my water which was exposed to the air after a few days. For what it’s worth, there may have been some small suspensions or colloids in the water, but nothing too large, since the water had been filtered by adsorption.

The mold that grew was already in the air. Some of the spores wound up in your water and started growing.
If the water was filtered properly there should not have been much of anything in the water. Even if it was filtered most molds can grow in pure water, just give it a few days.
