Does anyone know anything about Black Mold?
melanie asked:
We recently found black mold in my sons room on the bottom corner of his wall and floor and also in my dining room in a corner. During Hurricane Ike, our insulation under our house got wet. When we were able to get home and access the damage we found that all of the insulation under our double-wide was dripping wet. I was wondering since it didn’t appear the water got inside of my house, was the growth of the mold due to the wetness of the insulation? Also, if I saw the mold in the house is it possible to have it in the walls too? I am concerned about this problem because I am hearing how bad mold is for your health. My kids all have allergies and it seems to be worse now days. Is this due to the mold? I took pictures of all the mold that I can see saw I can show the insurance company, but we are having alot of problems with them. One adjuster came out and barley showed any concern for all of our damages. We need to re-level, roof damage, insulation needs to all be replaced and carpet is all bubbled up. I requested another adjuster to come out, but they are refusing to send me someone else. They also only paid me for a single-wide and not willing to change that. So now we have the mold issue and I really want to clean it up, so what do you think? Will the pictures be enough or should I wait until they decide to send someone out to my house?

Yes the mold could have been caused by the wet insulation. I am currently on a construction job that is dealing with black mold and we had to call out specialist to explain it to the owner/Govt. Black mold spreads fast and prefers damp dark places. You could have it in your house and not see it because it could be trapped in wet insulation. The insulation and drywall itself would not cause the mold but dust particles and organic materials such as the paper backing of the drywall and wood of the house is a breeding ground for mold. This damage can affect all or partial sections of your drywall the insulation would have to be replaced as well as the damage portions of drywall. A sure fire way to see if it is in the drywall remove a section where the mold is visible and inspect the back side of the drywall as well as the insulation behind it. you will see the mold on the paper and possible a little on the insulation which was probably saturated . You insulation unfortunately acts like a wick for the moisture drawing it up the walls.

All I can say is that you need to do whatever you can to remove the mold from your home – even if that means MOVING.
I became very, very ill from black mold over ten years ago, so much so that I was not able to work or function at all. I still have not completely recovered.
There are organizations you can contact that can tell you more. I think they have to do with “home air quality”.
(I used to have the book called “The Big Fat Book of Free Money” and the organizations are listed in there. By the way, you would be doing yourself a big favor if you purchased this book. It has a wealth of Information regarding numerous subjects. I used the book over and over when I had it in order to resolve a number of issues I had with my bank, the insurance company [which would most definitely come in handy for you], a credit card company and a dishonest realtor.)

I am not sure where you live. If you have a Menard’s home improvement store around you, they sell this stuff in a kit, it is called Mold something or something Mold, (sorry I don’t remember the name of it) It is about $20 give or take and it is some really good stuff. It kills the mold deep down where it comes from. I used it in my laundry room a couple of years ago and I have never seen it return!
