Ew, is that black mold?

Okay my question is that I have a freezer that is caked in black mold… Here is the story, this freezer has been in my garage for about 10 years and the garbage in the garage grew bigger and bigger from kids in the house hold getting older, just this past week me and few others have been cleaning out garage and when i got in front of the freezer cleaned out I opened it and there was about 2 feet of black mold all over everything in there and remember it has been in there for about 10 years and I don’t know when or how it has been unplugged and past week it has been about in the late 80s early 90s and in the garage with it being 80s or 90s it reaches up to a 100 in the garage and it must have been unplugged a long time ago…I don’t know if it would be better to freeze it up again or just get masks and a compressed hose… Free 10 pnts for the best answer and any non-sense will call for a report and a spam report

I would trash it. I wouldn’t risk trying to clean & use it again.=)

in australia, we have a product called ‘exit mould’. expensive-ish, but available in the cleaning aisle at the chain supermarkets. excellent stuff – it actually kills mould, so you could spray that all over as a first step, then hose it out after.
More natural options would be extensive amounts of plain white vinegar or oil of clove (*important – do not use oil of cloves if any person or pet in house is pregnant*)
Normal household bleach sprayed in undiluted will help, but it is actually not your best option as it doesn’t necessarily kill the mould.
Whichever way you go, I strongly agree with you about the mask, and also gloves. Mould happens, but you definitely don’t want to breathe it in once you start cleaning.
Good luck

I would have it hauled to the nearest dump. You said it was buried with your kids stuff so since you have kids do you really want them eating something that has been in a freezer that may or may not be completely free of black mold?

i had to clean freezer that had mold in it this spring i used clorox clean up and plenty of hot water to clean it out with . also dry it really good . try that first if that don’t work get rid of it .don’t sell or give it away take it to the scrap medal place , that way it gets recycled and you get some money in your pocket. if don’t have a place like that take it to the dump.

Black mold can be very dangerous and make people sick. If you want to save the freezer, you will have to make sure you have eye protection, masks and gloves. I would take the stuff out, double bag all of it and get it away from the house as soon as possible. Then you will have to wipe the whole freezer down, inside and out with bleach or a cleaner made especially for killing mold. My only concern would be if the mold has infiltrated the hoses, motor, etc. of the freezer and when you turn it on…..will it spew mold spores all over the place? Personally, I would not take the chance. If one of your family or friends is sensitive to molds of any kind, this thing could make them very sick. Maybe a new freezer is in order? If you can’t afford new, check your classifieds in the newspaper, people always have freezers they want to get rid of.
