How can I get my roof repaired and mold removed for free?

Sheri G asked:

My husband and I bought a home about a year ago in Bradford County, PA. We have since discovered that the roof leaks….a lot. We are a low income family and receive assistance in the form of food stamps and health insurance for our 2 children. We suspect that there is mold spreading like wildfire. We have all experienced symptoms of toxic mold poisoning. And the leak is located in and next to our 2 year old daughter’s bedroom. We need to get this problem fixed immediately before anyone is seriously harmed, or worse, killed. We can not afford to pay for the repairs and clean up necessary to keep our family safe….and I doubt Ty Pennington is gonna show up for an Extreme Home Makeover. Does anyone know of any agencies we can contact or anything to help us out? Please help us.

Place a claim with your homeowners insurance. Say it was storm damage…

Low income and getting stamps , yet you can afford to buy a house?Wasn`t the house inspected before you bought it? Call your local health inspector , maybe they will put in a vacate / house condemned order and you can move to temporary housing until you fix the problem. As the old saying goes, buyer beware, if the price is to good , there must be something wrong. Sorry , but I don`t know anyone in that area that will fix your problems for free. And why should they?

Is the house new? Was it recently reroofed? For either of those, the builder or roofing company should fix it for free.

If not, welcome to home ownership. Either you or someone you hire needs to look in the attic and/or walls to determine whether your suspicion is accurate. If so, then demolition, hygienic commercial cleaning, and rebuilding are called for. During cleaning and construction, you will have to live somewhere else.
