How can we determine if the home we live in has mold?
culpfamilyof5 asked:
We just rented a new home and signed a 1 year lease. We started moving things in and noticed a musty smell in portions of the house and my wifes allergies are beginning to act up. I don’t see any black spots any where, but we weren’t sure if this smell and allergy could be due to mold. If it is mold, would we see it somewhere, or is it possible that it could be in the walls.

How can we determine if this is the problem. Would we just need to tell the landlord, and can the landlord refuse to have it checked out?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

get a mold inspection. simple as that. protect your self.
Pay for a mold inspection… if it’s positive… go after your owner…
You really need to have the home inspected but there are things you can do to check. Pull the carpet back in the corners of exterior walls and look at the tack strip, if they are rusted you may have a moisture issue. Also check the attic crawl space and check the roof sheathing to see if it has black areas of mold. Also check to make sure the bathroom and kitchen vents are hooked up and exhaust to the outside. You can also check where the dryer is being vented. If its inside the wall a moisture test will find it. You must remember mold is every where you are breathing it right now. Mold need 3 things to grow, moistue, something to eat (drywall paper, wood ect) and the absents of UV light. This is why you get mold in your shower if you do not clean it with bleach. Hope this helps
