If there is mold on the outside of my pumpkin, are the seeds bad?

The seeds are still good. In the fields, a pumpkin fully rots and the seeds spring up next year. You’re good.

Sometimes pumpkins have “soft spots” on the outer shell. If you find these soft spots, then your seeds might be molding. If you start carving and smell a strong mold smell, then the seeds are bad.

In a normal, dry autumn season, the pumpkin (and its seeds) will last through most of the winter. Unfortunately, many growing locations this year have experienced wet temperatures, and the pumpkins aren’t going to last as long due to fungus and rot.

When growing a pumpkin (or any winter squash), try to keep it off the ground by placing it on a dry board or stone/brick; this will protect the skin on the lower side, and keep it from rotting as quickly.

Unless the mold has gone all the way through into the cavity the seeds should be fine.
