After 2 years of my girlfriends occasional outbursts and over reactions to almost everything that can be potentially harmful but definitely not positively harmful to ones self….I think I have discovered that she is a hypochondriac.I haven’t come straight out and mentioned my assumption as of yet because I am not absolutely sure cuz she also suffers from fibromyalgia (supposedly) and low immune system or difficiency of (again supposedly) .It has gotten so out of hand that she is staying at a friends house cuz she thinks there is toxic mold everywhere on our 4-plex property and that shes dying etc. I want her to see a therepist and she said she would but doesn’t get around to it and then all we do is fight. Can someone relate at all and give me some input please …….? I’m losing grip on my own sanity due to all this.thanx

a realative of mine, is perhaps the worst hyochondriac i ever knew, i think they enjoy the obsession with fictional illnesses to such an extent, that they refuse to see reason, or logic.he spends hours on the internet looking up his various symptons, and each time there is a new disease, or tumour, or virus he has.its got to such a point, that no-one bothers to reason him out of it,its like a hobby for him, and his bathroom cabinet is better stocked than most local pharmacies.
if you love her put up with it,or move on, i doubt you will cure her of it.

Part of this could be due to OCD…it can sometime manifest itself this way..but to be honest with you…sometimes, it can end up being a lifesaver…

I can relate-I knwo someone that comes down with every disease she hears about-
I say she has a problem with her hearing-she hears about a disease and she gets it-
never mind the fact that she ismiddle aged-and was an avergae student in school-
she thinks she may have things like cerebral palsy because one hand is dominant over the other-she thought that she had another developmental disorder because the kids with the disorder tend to be musically inclined and so is she-
She self diagnosed her self with Fibromyalgia-never mind the fact that she willingly only sleeps 5 hours a night on a mattress that is falling apart, spends 3 hours a day walking her dog though the woods, works full time-and has time to complain about how bad she feels over teh phone for a few hours a day–
I really have Fibromyalgia-I never even mention it unless I spontaneosly cry out ini pain or have trouble walking-she brings it up every night-while showing no distress….
I just ignore it-I am careful about not talking about anything medical in front of her-until she realizes she had a mental problem-it is pointless to tell her she is not physically sick….
It is frustrating that I am truly sick and struggling-and she is teh one seeking attention for a disease she doesn’t have–
she has beenin counseling-I don’t know if teh topic of hypochondria ever came up—–
I wouldn’t use teh term hypochondria-be more general-you worry about everything medical you hear about-a therapist may help you reduce your stress reactions–then hope the therapist picks up on hypochondria!
