Is mold on the cap of your sour cream container ok?

Kristin R asked:

I noticed a small amount of mold on the top of the sour cream container cap…after I ate it. The expiration date wasn’t until 8/4 and there was no visible signs of mold on the actual sour cream. I threw it out, I just want to find out if the people I fed are going to get sick or not.
1. I threw it out
2. I didn’t realize it had mold until AFTER it had been served.

It depend what kind of brand of sour cream you buy from, if mold there early then throw it away because it can happen when almost expiration date arrive.

You will be fine. We eat mold that we don’t realize all the time. I LOVE bleu cheese crumbles or dressing, and it’s made with mold. I haven’t gotten sick yet! You are perfectly fine. The acids in your stomach will break it down just fine. You MIGHT notice some diarrhea but that is if you ate a lot of it, I bet you are fine. :]

No it is not ok. Chances are they probably won’t get sick, or anything more than an upset stomach, but it can be very dangerous. Don’t do it again with any food :)

it’s safe because it was only on the lid. to prevent that, you can store your sour cream “upside down” which creates a better seal to keep air out. i would have just cleaned the lid off and kept using it though, since it wasn’t yet expired.
