Black mold in my apartment, what should I do?

Jamie asked:

I’ve lived in this apartment for a little over a year, and noticed black mold cropping up here and there. There is a small patch of it in the bathroom near the floor by the shower, which has clearly come through a patched-over area of the dry wall. There is also a very small, faint amount growing on the ceiling above the shower. There are faint signs of it in my kitchen cupboards as well, which were also clearly painted-over. We also found it growing in these little shelves on the insides of the doors of a small stand-alone pantry in the kitchen.

I have felt tired all the time, have been getting headaches here and there, and have been coughing all the time for over a month now. My boyfriend lives with me and he already has allergies and asthma, and they have both been worse.

We didn’t realize what was going on before, and already signed a lease for next semester and next school year. What should we do to have our landlords rectify the situation? Are we legally allowed to break the lease and move elsewhere? I’m really worried about this and don’t feel comfortable living here now. Are there any other worse health problems this can cause?

Any info or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How do you tell the difference in black mold and mildew? The contractor is saying I’m a troublemaker,?

I’ve been telling the owner where I live and work that I have black mold, which, the sheetrock behind all the walls, which black has come through the walls, and everytime it rains, which this has been going on for over 6 months, my house is flooded, and the baseboards have just fallen off, ect..covered in black speckled mold, is this black mold or mildew. He says it’s mildew, but, this has been going on for such a long time, he hasn’t seen it, he’s going by what the contractor who has taken over six months to find the leak, and the owner is siding with what the contractor says, and I’ve gotten repiratory infections twice, stay on antibiotics, and my sinuses/allergies are so bad, which I take meds year round for arn’t helping the pain in my face, thus, my dr. doesn’t know anything else to do but send me to an ear, nose and throat dr. The owner says, that there is pollen in the air, which I know that, but, take meds for that and my meds arn’t working, & can’t keep taking antibiotics.

How can we determine if the home we live in has mold?

culpfamilyof5 asked:

We just rented a new home and signed a 1 year lease. We started moving things in and noticed a musty smell in portions of the house and my wifes allergies are beginning to act up. I don’t see any black spots any where, but we weren’t sure if this smell and allergy could be due to mold. If it is mold, would we see it somewhere, or is it possible that it could be in the walls.

How can we determine if this is the problem. Would we just need to tell the landlord, and can the landlord refuse to have it checked out?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
