How can we determine if the home we live in has mold?

I don’t see any black spots any where, but we weren’t sure if this smell and allergy could be due to mold. If it is mold, would we see it somewhere, or is it possible that it could be in the walls.

How can we determine if this is the problem. Would we just need to tell the landlord, and can the landlord refuse to have it checked out?
